Almenara is one of the most thrilling courses on the Costa del Sol, with three sets of 9 holes that can be played in various combinations. It has a spectacular layout built around a series of vast lakes. Strenuous in parts, it delights at every turn and offers some breathtaking views of the Mediterranean
Designed by Javier Arana, one of Spain's most famous golf course architects, this 18 hole, par 72 course has narrow fairways lined by trees and difficult greens which challenge players of all levels.
It is a natural course and the many lakes and streams dotted around make accuracy an important aspect to any game played here.
A course that suits all players, demanding from the first tee but with easy-to-play fairways, fast and rooling greens, some well protected by bunkers; water obstacles on the course.
All in all, a varied and pleasant round.
The Atalaya Park hotel has two fine courses. The New course is shorter and tighter than its neighbour but still offers an enjoyable game, as well as some spectacular views of the Mediterranean and La Concha Mountain.
The par 3s are particularly memorable. Not one of the best courses on the Costa del Sol, but perfect if you fancy something a bit less demanding.
The Old course is a classically conceived parkland layout with wide fairways, strategically positioned bunkers and large, fast greens.
It's a pleasant place to play, with eucalyptus and olive trees providing a nice backdrop and some shade from the sun.
Situated at Caleta de Velez, commands magnificent sea and mountain views. Direct access from the Mediterranean Highway and it is 200m from the yacht club of Caleta. The golf course was designed by Jose Maria Canizares.
Cabopino
Cabopino is situated between Malaga and Fuengirola, close to Calahonda, and offers some beautiful sea views. Opened in 2001, it has quickly become one of the most popular courses in the area.
The design is reminiscent of Vilamoura's Old Course, with pine tree lined fairways and an emphasis on accuracy rather than length.
The 3rd hole, a driveable par 4 off a dramatically elevated tee, is especially memorable.
Short but sweet, Cabopino is well worth a visit.

Calanova Golf Club is a great new course located in Mijas, in the New Golf Valley in Malaga. The golf course has an exquisite and spectacular lay out that enables the player to use the strategy during the whole round, and has a very nice shaping. The course reminds to a links in some holes, with the best views to the sea and to the mountains in the whole Costa del Sol.
Greens have an average area above 500 sqm. Players will find them very exciting due to an extraordinary shaping work. This characteristic will allow a lot of pin positions, from the very simple to the most difficult ones.
There are a variety of fairways layouts. All of them are wide in the ball drop areas and clear, so that the player can see the obstacles before hitting the ball.
Tees are spread in different platforms, providing the players the possibility of playing the course with a huge variety of distances. This number of platforms will keep tees always in excellent conditions. From every single tee players can visualize the shot which makes the flight of the ball spectacular.

El Paraiso's friendly atmosphere and traditional Irish style have made it very popular with Irish golfers.
Set in the Paraiso valley, the course winds through hundreds of trees and crosses several hidden streams.
The lush fairways are wide but are bordered by heavy rough, so accuracy off the tee is vital.
El Paraiso is Spain's first Gary Player designed course and offers a good challenge whatever your standard

Estepona
Often unfairly overlooked, Estepona is a scenic and challenging course that offers great value for money. It's framed by the Sierra Bermeja Mountains and there are some lovely sea views.
The sloping fairways, which are lined with thick rough, provide a good test of technique.
It is considered one of the best golf courses in Spain . The privileged location of the layout will make the player enjoy wonderful views of the Mediterranean sea and mountains. The course has several tee boxes on each hole, which allows our staff to balance the toughness of the course.
It's a very fun golf course for amateurs and a super challenge for professional players. When you finish playing the 18 holes, you will notice that you have played all your clubs. Cabell Robinson has done a great job of balancing the different holes; they all have great variety and very tough holes are compensated with more affordable ones.
6579 Yards Par 72. Flamingos Golf Club is located in a beautiful enclave of Marbella with breath-taking views of the Mediterranean, Africa and Gibraltar. The course was designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido and has much cypress, orange, olive, pine, carob and chestnut trees as well as a lake formed by the Arroyo del Taraje stream.
The second oldest golf club in the Costa del Sol, Guadalmina opened as a 9 hole course in 1959. It was extended to 18 holes in the late 1960s.
The 10th and 11th holes run along the sea and the fairways are bordered by well established trees.
The North Course opened in 1973, and it is more gentle than the South Course, but just as interesting and quite tight in places
Guadalmina South Course is the second oldest course on the coast and is a real test of accuracy.
Many of the tees require precise placement on the fairway due to the private gardens surrounding the course.
The 14th can challenge even the lowest handicappers as tall pines line the hole, with a strategically placed bunker in front of the green, waiting to swallow up anything short.
Guadalhorce Golf Club was inaugurated in 1990 and has a friendly, family atmosphere. The Par 72 course was designed by Kosti Kuronen and it is divided into two distinct halves. The front nine is not unlike an English parkland course but with more tropical vegetation, while the back nine is the trickier half, with undulating fairways, lakes, and raised greens. Many of the greens prove difficult and some are very large, with a couple of holes sharing large greens. Guadalhorce is located about 7 km from the Malaga airport

6616 Yards Par 72.Set in a spectacular, hilly landscape, both courses offer an exciting challenge in stunning surroundings, with lush fairways, elevated greens and carefully positioned water hazards.

La Canada
La Canada was born when the local villagers decided that they wanted a golf course. They hacked out a mountainside track, the municipality donated the land, Robert Trent Jones did the design and La Canada was built as a 9-hole course.
With the recent completion of a new 9 holes by Dave Thomas, La Canada is now a thrilling blend of styles. Thomas' front 9 features a lot of water, while the back 9 is typical Trent Jones.
La Duquesa Golf Course is a typical Trent Jones layout demanding concentration and straight driving.
Winding around El Hacho beacon hill overlooking the Mediterranean to Africa.
At the spectacular 17th, just 129 metres tee to green but 30 metres straight down, you should beware of the wind especially if the poniente is blowing from the west. The views may play havoc with your scoring.
La Quinta offers 27 of the most popular holes on the Costa del Sol. The beautiful landscape and near perfect on-course conditions make playing here a real delight.
The course is hilly and is one of the most technically demanding in the area, with narrow, sloping fairways, plenty of hazards to negotiate and fast greens that are tricky to read.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 14 Feb €55 15 Feb - 15 May €65 16 May - 30 Sep €55 01 Oct - 31 Dec €66
Las Brisas Golf, given the royal status, is an absolutely excellent golf course located in the famous Golf Valley west of Marbella at the Costa del Sol in Spain.
The golf course opened in 1968 and hosted many major international golf events. Among them are the Spanish Open three times, the Mediterranean open and the World Cup twice.
Although Las Brisas Golf is a private golf course it is open for visitors. Arranging a tee-off time on this course, however, is not always easy!
A course of considerable beauty, Lauro golf is adjacent to the protected forest of the Sierra de Mijas.
Its parkland layout has been carefully levelled with many of the fairways cut between lines of olive trees.
A challenging course with a number of formidable water hazards with deceptive holes, in particular the 4th, where a steep slope up to the green makes the pin seem closer than it really is.
Los Arqueros is located on the mountainous Ronda road and has some spectacular views. Designed by Seve Ballesteros, its undulating terrain and mixture of narrow fairways, well-placed hazards and small greens make it a stiff test even for professionals.
Apparently a favourite of Sean Connery, this Trent Jones creation is very popular with visiting golfers due to its level terrain and its sheer playability (no matter what your handicap is). The front 9's broad, sweeping fairways wind through pretty orange groves, while the back 9 offers more variety, with water coming into play.

Marbella Golf & Country Club
Marbella Golf Club is a difficult but enjoyable challenge. It's a typical Robert Trent Jones design, with sweeping fairways, lots of shrewdly placed bunkers and large, undulating greens.
The opening holes are especially hilly and are crossed by ravines and gullies that demand accurate and brave tee-shots.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 30 Sept €50 1 Oct - 31 Dec €75
Probably the two most popular courses on the eastern coast are found at Mijas. Los Lagos has generous, mildly undulating fairways but also plenty of water and sand hazards, making it a stern test of skill.
Green Fees: 1 Jan - 28 Feb €65 1 Mar - 30 Apr €70 1 May - 31 May €65
Though slightly shorter than the neighbouring Los Lagos, the course is no less attractive or challenging. The undulating fairways are lined with olive trees and the fast greens are well protected by some large, twisting bunkers.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 29 Feb €65 1 Mar - 30 Apr €70 1 May - 31 May €65
Opened in 1990 this course follows the gentle contours of the Sierra Mijas foothills. The fairways and greens are well kept in lush splendour throughout the year and water is supplied from three artificial ponds, which come into play on four holes.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 May €60 1 June - 30 Sept €40 1 Oct - 31 Dec €60
The fairways meander through a mixture of thick, straggling vegetation and rocky slopes. The uneven terrain and cunningly placed water hazards make this a difficult course, especially in windy conditions.
Playing here is an enthralling challenge - if you want a real test of skill, give it a try. Buggies are compulsory but are included in the green fees.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 29 Feb €35 1 Mar - 25 May €45 1 June - 14 Sept €55 15 Sept - 23 Nov €85 24 Nov - 31 Dec €75
The course is very picturesque, winding down towards the sea through mature trees (which offer plenty of shade) and vegetation. The perfectly manicured fairways make several crossings of the Real River, and you'll have to putt well on the fast greens.
Rio Real is a pretty long course but don't let that put you off - it's flat, easy to walk and the open fairways will encourage you to really go for it with your driver.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 May €85 01 June - 15 Sept €57 16 Sept - 31 Dec €85
San Roque's second course, designed by legendary American architect Perry Dye in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros, opened in early 2004.
It's a perfect compliment to its renowned neighbour, but also a fine course in its own right.
Built on undulating land, the layout affords stunning panoramic views of the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean beyond.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 May €100 1 June - 30 Sept €80 1 Oct - 31 Oct €100 1 Nov - 31 Dec €80
7043 Yards Par 72. San Roque's Old Course is one of the best in Spain and is ranked 35th in Europe by Golf World magazine.
The front 9 gives superb mountain views, winding through a cork oak forest before heading back to the clubhouse via the demanding and seemingly endless par 4 8th.
The back 9 is laid out across rolling hills and includes lots of shots across water that will really test your judgement and your nerve.
The closing holes incorporate the resort's shimmering lakes to present a finish as beautiful as it is challenging.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 May €160 1 June - 30 Sept €120 1 Oct - 31 Oct €160 1 Nov - 31 Dec €120
Santa Clara was opened in 2000 it has a surprisingly finished look. The layout is superb. After a relatively flat and friendly start, the course rises over hills and then runs along the valley floor, with a liberal sprinkling of water and well placed bunkers.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 30 June €95 1 July - 31 Aug €75 1 Sept - 30 Nov €95 1 Dec - 31 Dec €75
Santa Maria's layout has recently been transformed to create one of the best and most popular courses on the Costa del Sol.
Running through two valleys with great views of the Mediterranean Sea, the course makes the most of its undulating terrain to provide a good test of golf, with well-placed bunkers designed to make you really think about your shots.
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 Jan €60 01 Feb - 31 May €70 01 June - 30 Sep €45
This new course for 2004 is situated between Fuengirola and Marbella. This is a par 72 18-hole course offering breathtaking views and manicured greens. Water bunkers are only on the 15th, 16th and 18th only - some of you may be happy to know!
The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 25 Feb €85 26 Feb - 27 May €95 28 May - 2 Sept €70 3 Sept - 25 Nov €95 26 Nov - 31 Dec €85
Opened in 1964, the exclusive Sotogrande course was Robert Trent Jones Snr's first course in Europe and has matured beautifully. It's rated No. 7 in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine and it's easy to see why.
The course has lots of trees, lots of bunkers and lots of water and is lots of fun to play.
Getting to grips with the huge, severely undulating greens is a real challenge. Very expensive, but worth every penny.
This Pepe Gancedo masterpiece is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful courses on the Costa del Sol. Now back on the 'must play' list, Torrequebrada is a real test from beginning to end.
A previous host of the Spanish Open and the home base of Spanish Ryder Cup star Miguel Angel Jimenez, its steep terrain, water and sand hazards make it a great technical challenge - perhaps too difficult for high handicappers.
There are no less than eight doglegs and accuracy off the tee is of paramount importance. It may be short, but it certainly isn't easy!
Green Fees: 01 Jan - 31 May €85 01 June - 31 Aug €65
Valderrama more than justifies its legendary reputation. Host to ten Volvo Masters events and, of course, the 1997 Ryder Cup, this is probably the best course in all of Europe.
Playing here truly is a 'once in a lifetime' experience - which is perhaps just as well when you consider how high the green fees are! It's an expensive, private club with limited access for visitors (you can usually only tee off between 12pm and 2pm), but anyone who plays here will remember their round forever.
