When the wind blows, it changes from a sleeping giant into a terror. Even from the club`s medal tees, 6,941 yards, it is still formidable, Carnoustie will host the Open Championship again in 2007 where Tiger Woods will be chasing a rare treble.

While the course generally plays approximately a half-mile from the shore, rest assured that this does not protect the golfer from the usually strong, swirling and often Machiavellian, firth winds.
The inherent challenge of Glasgow Gailes is stiffened by its heather-lined fairways, which when in full bloom during summer months often results in heartbreak for the less than accurate strike.

Previously known as the Monarch's Course, the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles only began its existence in 1993 and it bears testament to the design work of Jack Nicklaus that the course is already rated alongside it two older siblings and has been chosen to stage the Ryder Cup matches of 2014.
5965 Yards Par 68, is a stern test for those with aspirations of beating par. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security on the first tee, as this is a challenging opener.
The ground falls away at your feet, the fairway swings round to the left and slopes towards the trees and there are a couple of cunningly placed bunkers, which test your approach to a miniscule green.
The King's Course, opened in 1919, is a masterpiece of design which has tested the aristocracy of golf, both professional and amateur.
Selecting the right club for each approach shot is the secret on the King's. It is certainly one of the most beautiful and exhilarating places to play golf in the world,
Located directly on the North Sea coast only six miles from St. Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links is without doubt one of the most breathtaking courses in the world.
A links course through and through, with the North Sea is in view on each and every one of the 18 holes and in play on one, the ground is firm and fast.
The 17th is a par four of 480 yards from the back tee, and surges parallel to the sea toward a green set on ground slightly higher than the fairway.

Machrie is very much a traditional links golf course
There are many reasons to relish the prospect of playing at Machrie Links, not least of which is the stunning surrounding scenery.
When allied to the quality of the course, the natural hazards of the links game, a number of blind holes and the sense of history that effuses from the venue, any day spent here will certainly be a memorable one.
Situated on the Kintyre Peninsula, 140 miles from Glasgow, Macrihanish Golf Club may be slightly off the beaten track but its remoteness is central to its abundant charm.
With some of the world's most naturally undulating fairways and amazingly contoured greens, much like Royal Dornoch, this links would certainly play host to many prestigious events, if not for its relative isolation.
Forever remembered as the birthplace of the Open Championship, Prestwick and has hosted 24 Opens in all, the last one being 1926, after which the crowds were deemed too large.
Protected by the meandering waters of "Pow Burn", Prestwick boasts a unique array of holes with significant amounts of heather and gorse, which when combined with some typically hellish Scottish bunkers can often ruin an otherwise respectable score.
One of Scotland's most famous golf courses and an Open championship venue on 8 occasions to date,
The course is set on the Ayrshire coast in the west of Scotland and is steeped in history.
Royal Troon is a true test of your golfing skills as not only do you have the wind to contend with, but deep rough interspersed with gorse and broom makes accurate shot making essential.
Located ten mile north of St. Andrews, Scotscraig Golf Club is another course, which plays frequent host to final qualifying for the British Open,
There is little doubt that its fine links turf and smooth, fast greens make it a truly worthy venue.
Although very close to the sea and despite being correctly classified as a links course, Scotscraig is somewhat parkland in nature with far more trees in evidence than on most links.

Such is the history attached the Old Course at St. Andrews, it is virtually impossible to do it justice by mere words - but try we must.
Though the championship credentials of the Old Course hardly require justification, the venue has played host to 25 Open Championships and many other events over the years. And while it measures almost 7,000 yards from the championship tees, the visitor is more likely to take on the 6,566-yard challenge.
The Old Course at St. Andrews is a must for all avid golfers, who should make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

While the worldwide recognition commanded by Turnberry is due mostly to the Ailsa course, it should not be forgotten that the Arran course is also a fine test of golf, with a par of 69 and a yardage of 6,276, it is definitely worth a visit.
There is however, little doubt that the jewel in the Turnberry crown is Ailsa.
