Carton House has emerged in recent years as one of the most exquisite golfing destinations in Ireland and beyond, as a result of two terrific, well-maintained courses, and an unrivalled level of service.
Montgomerie Course
Having been Europe’s finest golfer for many years, Colin Montgomerie has now established himself as a major player in the world of golf course design. His creation at Carton House can only be described as a masterpiece. Taking his influence from his favourite courses, including Royal Melbourne, Royal Troon and Turnberry, Colin has placed the maximum emphasis on strategic bunkering, which he believes is the key to building a good, fair challenge.
Every hole, and its respective bunkering, is designed with the direction of the prevailing wind in mind; almost all of them should play in a cross-wind most of the time, and as such, the hazards are positioned appropriately. With the vicious fescue skirting the fairways, and fantastic putting surfaces, it is no surprise that the Montgomerie has already become a respected tournament venue, having hosted the 2005 and 2006 Nissan Irish Opens.
O’Meara Course
The O’Meara Course may not have the reputation of Monty’s gem, but the 1998 Masters and Open Champion has constructed a worthy supporter. Skirting the banks of the River Rye, which come into play on the back nine, this is a lush parkland test, set in a truly idyllic scene.
