Ladybank often goes unheralded, given the raft of famous links courses that Fife has to offer. However, this is a top quality heathland course, demonstrated by the Royal & Ancient’s decision to host Open Championship qualifying at Ladybank since its nomination in 1978.
Many famous names have pounded the fairways in search of the chance to compete for the Claret Jug, including Darren Clarke, Justin Leonard, Bernhard Langer, Payne Stewart, Sam Torrance and Ian Woosnam. Inside the clubhouse is a plaque recognising the exhibition match played between Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros, both of whom are now honorary members.
The course itself places a premium on straight hitting; accurate drivers will glean birdie chances, but there is no mercy for the wayward. This is a beautiful golf course, cutting through the towering Scots pines, and should not be omitted from a golfing tour in Fife.
