With over 35 years in business have put together a list of travel tips for you to use as a guide or suggestion before you travel.
Make a list of everything you need to do before you depart, plan well in advance so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
If your passport is out of date (or close to its expiry date, certain countries require that your passport is valid for a full 6 months following your return to Ireland). If you need a new passport, collect the application forms from your local Garda station, get 2 passport size photos and visit the Passport office. Alternatively use the Passport Express services at An Post who guarantee a return within 10 working days.
Visit the Bank who will advise you on money and foreign exchange. Traveller’s cheques and euro cheques are probably the safest way to carry money abroad. Carrying a small amount of the local currency is handy upon arrival for tipping. Credit cards are widely used and accepted worldwide.
Certain countries require entry visas, apply in good time if this is relevant to your destination. If you are flying longhaul, check with your local GP or clinic if any vaccinations are necessary for that area. A course of injections may need a specific time to “kick in”, so don’t leave this to the last minute.
When you receive your flight tickets, double check all the timings and ensure you are aware of check-in times and departure times. Work out the journey time to the airport and arrange your taxi or lift. If you decide to drive leave plenty of time to find a parking space!
Get in touch with a close friend or family before you set off advising them on your holiday dates, so they are aware your house will be vacant for a period. Leave a spare set of keys with a trusted friend or relative and don't forget to leave a contact number or details, if possible.
Cancel the milk and newspaper deliveries.
If you are lucky leave the family pets with a friend or family. Otherwise, book the family pets into the local kennels or veterinary surgery and make sure your pet has up to date vaccinations in readiness for his/her own little holiday.
If you have a medical condition or specific ailment, make sure you bring adequate medicines, lotions, pills etc. as these may not be available abroad (or have the recognised brand names). If your condition is serious, it may be necessary to carry a letter from your Doctor confirming your fitness to travel.
Make sure your suitcase will fit on the plane!!! Make a list of all the clothes you wish to bring - dresses, trousers, swimwear, underwear, scandals, and toiletries (reduce this list by half and then half again as you will still have too much!!!). When you've decided on the ultimate holiday wardrobe, wash, iron, dry clean etc. well in advance and be prepared.
Morning of departure switch off the gas, oil, cooker etc., water the plants or leave to soak in the bath, deposit the pets in kennels, leave spare keys with the neighbours, turn on the alarm and sit in the car or taxi. before you actually set off for the airport, do a double check again:
